Identify the right program type
Already an RN with an associate degree or diploma? An RN-to-BSN completion program may be the relevant route. Schools commonly require active RN licensure and review transcripts before determining remaining credits.
Not yet an RN? Look for a prelicensure nursing program that explicitly prepares graduates for initial RN licensure. An online label on an RN-to-BSN program does not make it an entry-level nursing program.
Seeking an advanced nursing degree? Check whether the program is general graduate nursing, an advanced-practice specialty, or a post-licensure completion pathway. These categories have different prerequisites and outcomes.
Check location, clinical work, and transfer rules
Ask if your state is authorized. Confirm authorization for the student’s residence and any state where practice experiences will occur. State lists can change, and online enrollment is not automatically available nationwide.
Ask how clinical or practice experiences are arranged. Some online programs still require direct or community-based practice. Clarify whether you must find a site, whether the school approves it, and whether the activity can be completed near you.
Get a written transfer evaluation. Compare accepted credits, required prerequisites, minimum grades, and the remaining credit total. Published sample plans may not reflect your prior coursework.
Price the whole route. Include tuition, fees, books, clinical compliance costs, travel, and any courses that do not transfer. Check whether published rates apply to your residency and enrollment year.
Confirm schedule and support. Ask about term starts, course length, synchronous meetings, time limits, advising, and expected weekly workload.
Use the school’s current admissions office and catalog for your own situation. The examples below show how requirements differ; they are not an endorsement or a guarantee of enrollment.
